Professionally we have each developed new Sleep services, published & presented research papers & delivered teaching programmes. As members of various national & international sleep societies we have seen tremendous advancement in the knowledge of Sleep & its disorders & have actively developed & participated in clinical trials of new therapies.

Why do we provide Sleep Education?

Despite being involved in many positive developments within this developing speciality we have also experienced frustrations. Outside our specialist field the concept & importance of Sleep Medicine is poorly understood. Undergraduate & postgraduate training of doctors, nurses & other professionals in Sleep Medicine is very limited (or non existent) & Government recognition & funding of this aspect of medicine is poor.

We have a passion to increase awareness of Sleep Medicine & to promote help for patients with sleep problems through education. Primary Care is the gateway to accurate diagnosis & effective therapy & can provide essential help & support to patients with a variety of sleep disorders.

Why should your employer fund your Professional Development

& invest in Sleep Education in Primary Care?

We aim to help improve knowledge, provide useful tools & resources, & develop skills which can be used appropriately in Primary Care. This should facilitate local management & treatment of some patients but also enable primary care teams to identify at-risk patients who need referral to specialist tertiary centres.

Our ultimate goal is to help patients with sleep disorders. This strategy should significantly reduce the burden of untreated sleep disorders on Primary Care & ensure that tertiary centres receive appropriately referred patients.  Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) will recognise the organisational & economic value of screening patients for sleep disorders & of delivering local care. Many tertiary sleep centres in the UK have long waiting lists for expensive investigations & unfortunately many of the patients they assess do not have a significant sleep disorder.
